Excercise in Translations (Favolosi Intrecci di Seta)

I just love this book "Favolosi Intrecci di Seta" and cannot help playing with translations.

An old man, a dream and a butterfly.

Once upon a time a weary traveler stopped to rest under an oak tree and fell asleep. He dreamt that he turned into a butterfly. Light and free the butterfly floated through the air until it settled on a flower to rest. There between the petals it fell asleep. The butterfly dreamt that it became an old man sleeping under an oak tree.

When the old man opened his eyes he didn't know anymore if he was a man dreaming of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man.

Il Solleone

The weather forecast promises high + 31 C and even at nine in the morning the sun is blazingly hot. It is certainly better than last weekend when the temperature hovered between + 34 C and + 36 C.

Italians say that it isn't normal for June, it is usually at the end of July when it is getting so hot. While listening to the complains about weather , "C'è troppo caldo/ Fa caldo, si soffoca" - "Too hot/So hot, it's hard to breath" - I discovered two wonderful expressions:

"C'è un caldo da morire" - Loosely, "I can die from such heat"

And, the most magnificent, "Il Solleone".

The word describes the scorching sun of the hottest time of the year. The hottest (the days of the Lion Sun) days came early this summer." It is one of the portmanteau words which combine two or more roots together, in this case Sole + Leone = Solleone/ Sun + Lion = Lion Sun

Behold...                                                        "Il Solleone

Words, words, words

A little bit of linguistic exploration brought in by my Qigong teacher.

I said in Italian, “Vorrei di fermare questo”. (I want to stop this) referring to my habit of negative thinking.
She corrected me, “No fermare – trasformare, c’e un differenza.” (Not stop – transform).

It stayed with me not only as a beautiful observation but as a bit of linguistic magic as well. Simply by adding the prefix tras, she changed the only possible action into infinite possibilities: "fermare" into "trasformare". When we stay “stop” we evoke prohibition, and don’t leave any opportunity for discussion or a choice. When we transform something - an open endlessness comes into play, and there are multiple choices. So, I have been thinking about it and the little illustration in drawings was born…

Note: Italian isn’t my first language – I just happen to live in Rome. Of course, English isn’t my native language either – I just happen to exist in it.

Amore and an excercise in translation.

When the moon hits your eye as a big pizza pie,

That’s amore

When the world seems to shine like you’ve had too much wine

That’s amore…

Quando la luna ti colpisce gli occhi
Come una grossa pizza
Questo è amore

Quando il mondo sembra brillare
Come se avessi bevuto troppo vino

Questo è amore

Never ever before have  I lived in the country when the word “amore”so freely spills in the everyday life.

Here is a father talking to his toddler, "Dimmi, amore, cosa vuoi?"  There is a woman on a phone, “Cio, amore, a dopo”. A bit further a young man in the café asks his girlfriend, “Ma perche ti preoccupi, amore?”

The little word jumps from street to street, bounces from the walls of the buildings, and soars into the air, creating a bit of an extra sparkle in its wake.

Of course “love “is used in English language in much similar manner, but one doesn’t hear it  being employed with such frequency and generosity.

And in Russian? I am not sure that “love” is used in such liberal way in Russian language – it has a bit more private and serious connotation. E in russo?

Whether we use "amore" often or not, may we always give and receive it with kindness and gratitude.

Apples and Kisses

There is a common proverb, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away", which in Italian will sound exactly the same, "Una mela al giorno leva il medico di torno" But, leave it to passionate Italians to come up with "Un bacio al giorno toglie il dentisto di torno" ("A kiss a day keeps the dentist away."

Exercise in Translating - because why not?

One of my friends posted on FB a quote from Italian song "Per il resto tutto bene" by Eros Ramazzotti. I kept returning to its lyrics in my head; and ended up doing a very loose translation of it. It is an interesting contradiction between the lyrics of the song and somewhat upbeat music. .Eros Ramazzotti Per il resto tutto bene

All is well aside from the things that are broken.
Except for the sky that is pregnant with rain,
Except for the fact that the rain drops start falling,
Aside for indifference spreading away,
And light force keeps losing to forces of evil.

The rest is just fine, the rest is just fine.

Aside from the world that is ready for changes
That bares its teeth as a mad hungry dog.
It seems like the peace broke down in pieces.
The things that familiar don’t exist anymore.

Aside from the fact that we are all separated,
And each of us does what serves us the best.
The things are all well, the ones that not broken.

The rest is just fine, the rest is just fine.

There are billions of people who live on the planet.
All voice the opinions but not many think.
There is always another war conflict in making,
The news seize being the news by the end of the day.

If you ask me how I am doing
I most certainly say that I am all right
But the truth is right here and can’t hide any longer:

The things are just fine, but the rest is all right.

Tutti parlano e nessuno pensa.

Ti rispondo tutto bene
