A Harbinger of Good Fortune.

Q: "What is a lonely stork doing standing in the middle of the street?"

A:  "Spreading a good fortune of course, silly."

It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life...

And, it's a whole new Year! Greetings and salutations to 2018!  And, I would like to start this year with Andre Gide's quote: "Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But, since no one was listening, everything must be said again".
May this quote be a reminder to me and you that every time the feeling of "I don't have anything new to contribute" is stopping us from writing/speaking/being creative , we shouldn't be discouraged and simply do it anyway.

Art Collective

I have been working on an art project since my return from DC. The idea was to capture the essence of a place that I am living in now through a short phrase. To take it a step further I asked my family and friends to send me the photos of needed letters that they found in signs around their cities. The letters came from the US, Russia, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Italy, Spain, Iceland, and of course, Bahamas. So, on the eve of my birthday, despite dreary weather and  news of yet another shooting, let's celebrate friendship, family and sunshine. Here goes our joint effort...

Word of the Day

While we are waiting on which path Ms.Maria (a new hurricane brooding nearby) will decide, I am entertaining myself with a new book "Why Fonts Matter" by Sarah Hyndman.

There I found an interesting word "signage". Such an elegant construction:  the root "sign" that holds numerous meanings + suffix "age". And, this splendid little suffix indicates a mass or a grouping of something especially in the words coming from French as in "foliage", "collage""assemblage" "entourage" or even "language".

Webster's dictionary defines signage as “signs, as used for display, advertisement, etc." It is a bit boring, isn’t? Because its overall meaning is so much more – it is a science of decoding ones surroundings (physical or emotional) – figuring out where you are, how well are you, and so on.

Words are such interesting creatures!

"Nothing is permanent but change" Heraclitus

Someone told me recently, "There is nothing new after a certain age, nothing really changes and if changes, it changes for the worst." That made me think of how many new things happened during past year, how many things I am doing for the first time in my life.

  • It is the first time I am living by the ocean, and can swim every day because the weather is warm all year around.
  • It is the first time we live in the country where there is no need to learn a new language (I still learnt basic Haitian, but it is mostly work trappings.).
  • It is the first time I regularly go to the yoga studio, where instructions are in English (and what a thrill it is ! I even tried aerial yoga, and yes, for the first time)
  • It is the first time we live without our older son who started college.
  • It is the fist time I have my own car and drive on the left side of the road.
  • It is the first time I have to visit prisoners, identify the bodies, and speak with grief stricken people on the regular basic.
  • It is the first time invoking of a higher power became a necessity in order to withstand the above.
  • It is the first time I notice that I worry less and less about what people think of me.

The constant in all this is my yoga practice. Like a raft it keeps me afloat.

Random musing.

It seems like my  plants are doing their best when I leave them alone, as soon as I start paying attention to them, they loose their will to live. Perhaps, I stumbled on a new live strategy...

Returning to Normal

The title of my blog "Changes and Colours" mirrors the constant motives of my life: changes - small every day ones, and big - like moving to another country, and colours (or appreciatio of beauty) - in which I find my grounding. As soon as I find myself reveling in the beauty of my surroundings, noticing small delights here and there - I know that everything will work out.

 Welcome to Bahamas!
