Windy Night

For two nights in a row we had a violent wind storms. The wind wailed from the evening till morning, shaking the windows, and rocking the trees. It felt as it tried to move the island and let it go afloat. By morning the wind got tired of its fruitless efforts and consoled itself by sending gushing blows once in a while. By 11 the darkness dissolved into grey twilight of the winter day. It became obvious that the sky was pregnant with expectation of snow. Finally, around six, first big snowflakes descended on earth. They started slowly, one by one, and rapidly grew into a thick blanket. In 20 minutes Hafnarfjörður turned into Winter Wonderland. And, as usual in Iceland, snow turned into mash in the next hour.

Winter is here

Winter is here. I opened the curtains today to discover a thin, transparent layer of snow on the ground. The first snow! Ice-covered roads glittered in the sun. It caused everybody to slow down and move with anticipation of the fall in small uncertain steps, with hands lightly spread for balance. The cars also switched to a crawl to avoid sliding. But you could feel the excitement of something happening for the first time this year.
Maybe later I will get used to the striking contrast between grey days and sudden splashes of colour but for now I cannot help myself, I have to make photos.
